New Journey
One step into a long journey. Photographer Kim Hyung-wook¡¯s ¡°Land of the Gods¡±, which portrays the exciting and defiant spirit as one steps into the unknown, has been selected as the official poster for this year¡¯s Ulju Mountain Film Festival (UMFF). The dynamic movements between the steep and gigantic rock is akin to the adventurous and challenging first step of the 3rd UMFF. We hope to relay through this poster the stories of ¡°New Journey,¡± people, and nature. Kim, specializing in remote areas and an assister of Nepal, has his own style of expressing his moments with a mountain. More of his works capturing beautiful mountains, nature, and people will be displayed in this year¡¯s Special Exhibition of Himalaya Nepal.
While there may be many different paths that can lead to a mountaintop, there usually is only one good way to reveal and nurture a true sense of self. Indeed, mountain climbing is as much about the outer landscape - rocks, trees, streams and sky - as it is about the climber¡¯s inner landscape - doubts, fears, hopes and joys. Inspired by UMFF 2018¡¯s visually-contrasted official poster, and influenced by Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher¡¯s work on infinity and hyperbolic geometry (particularly his famous lithographies of endless, impossible stairs), the main trailer features a lone climber who finds himself sharing the trail with multiple versions of himself. From rather naturalistic at first, the space becomes more and more abstract; the mountain reduces to a few boulders until the climber eventually stands atop a single rock. From afar, even a summit, after all, becomes a mere point on the horizon. (Director - Sébastien Simon)
