Allan DWAN
Johanna Spyri¡¯s novel Heidi is famous for its Japanese animation and TV series, but the first film based on this book was made in the US in 1937. The film begins when Heidi, an orphan girl being raised by her aunt, comes to stay with her grandfather, who lives alone in the German Alps. For the most part, the film follows the book closely, but certain backgrounds and character details differ, and includes Hollywood-style morals and suspenseful action. The bright and lovable Heidi is expertly portrayed by the youngest Academy Award recipient, Shirley Temple. (YOO Sun-hee)
