Tanaka Torao(77), a WWII veteran returning from the battlefield, settles in the middle of the woods near his hometown with his wife, Fusako(72). Unlike many others who became rich and prosperous thanks to Japan¡¯s extraordinary economic growth, the couple decides to go off the grid to become fully self-sufficient, without electricity, telephone, or running water. They grow just enough crops to feed themselves and heat the water for a bath with firewood they chop as a part of their daily routine. They continuously get back to the mountain, hoping to die in their little nest and along the way, their children start to understand their way of living. Capturing their forest for a long time in search of an answer to what it means to live in nature, the film explores how their way of living gets meaningful as it is passed down to the next generation.
