J.B.L NOEL
The first people to summit the Everest are known as a New Zealand climber Edmund Hillary and a Nepali sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953. However, it is yet a big question if Malory had ever reached the top or not when he was climbing the mountain in 1924. He is well known for the answer ¡°Because it is there¡± to the question ¡°Why do you climb the Everest?¡±. This is an official archive film of British expedition of the Everest in 1924, restored by BFI in 2013, with digital technology and newly composed music. Maybe because filming tools were too heavy and the circumstances were limited at that time, the Everest in the film is very far and hidden under snow an/d clouds all through running time. On the other hand, ¡®Chomolungma¡¯, which is the old name of the Everest, meaning the roof of the world and mother of all the gods, overwhelms in any other footage.

Noel was sent to school in Switzerland,
where he developed a keen interest in
mountaineering. In 1924, Noel joined the
expedition to Everest, where Mallory and
Irvine were sacrificed. Despite the loss of the
climbers, Noel made The Epic of Everest both
as a record and a memorial to them.
