Four years prior to his representative film Tokyo Story, Ozu Yasujiro had completed building his style in this film where there is an old man whose daughter is supposed to get married before it¡¯s too late, a fine mise-en-scene that is seen through a fixed camera inside a traditional Japanese house and the sophisticated emotions floating over the quiet screen. In particular, the scenery of Kyoto where the father and daughter have their last trip and the ending shot that is outside a house are the core essence of his directing style. The film is distinctive and overwhelming especially in the scenes where the apple peels keep falling as if they are implicating the end is near, the father droops his head and the waves roll in the shore as if they are visualizing the generation change.
