The Powell River in British Columbia is a forestry area that has provided strong lumber to the world for a long time. There are many big rock walls which could be compared to those in Yosemite and are good for climbing. To get to those walls, mountaineers use the roads that had been paved deep into the valleys for the purpose of transporting lumber. When the logging industry, which has been the core of the local economy, reaches far enough to cut the old-growth forests, however, the locals and the mountaineers face the dilemma of conflicts between development and preservation. They review the direction of the lumber industry that has reached the point of depleting natural resources and discuss the sustainable development that turns the infrastructure of the local economy into mountain climbing sports and tourism.
