This film takes a motif from the Scottish 'selkie folk story' that depicts the love between a seal woman and a fisherman. Little Ben lives on a small island with his parents. One day, his mother disappears after giving birth to his sister Saoirse who also disappears on the night of her 6th birthday. When she comes back, her shocked grandmother takes Ben and Saoirse to a city. Later, this brother and sister take on a journey to go back to their hometown, and the fairies tell them that Saoirse is actually a selkie. Would Ben and Saoirse save the fairies from Macha who steals emotions and turns them into stones? Would they be able to go back to their hometown? Song of the Sea is a dreamlike story that unfolds with a background that is just like a beautiful watercolour painting.
