Recognized as the ‘Spielberg of Korea’, hitmaker and a key figure of the 80s Korean cinema renaissance, Bae Chang-ho’s 1984 film Whale Hunting is a road movie following university students Byeong-tae and Min-u’s journey to the island of Udo, the hometown of Chunja, a prostitute they meet by chance. What did  Byeongtae, who wants to escape from his suffocating reality, mean whenever he cried ‘whale’? Through  Byeongtae’s struggle to protect Chun-ja as they flee through the winter cold as biting as the harsh social climate, and Chun-ja’s pimp coming after them and beating them down, the film seeks love and the precious whale that we all have in our hearts Ahn Sung-ki, Lee Mi-sook and Kim Soo-chul who also worked on the original soundtrack presents an interesting landscape of the 80s.
