The only sounds you can hear on the rugged Canadian bigwall, ¡®Bugaboo¡¯ are the heavy breathing of climbers who risk their lives climbing and the bleak wind. Loneliness and yearning grow as the ascent proceed. It¡¯s their greatest desire to climb the wall, but it¡¯s an almost impossible reality to overcome. This is a film which fully reveals the filmmaker¡¯s self-reflective dilemma. Humans seem too small as they attempt to climb up the snow-covered great rocky mountain. And the climbers¡¯ deep confusion and loneliness as they shift between reality and the world of climbing are delicately presented to reveal a strong will to climb to the top. Winner of the 2008 Trento Film Festival, Jury Special Prize Award. (Billy CHOI)

Director

  • LIM Il-JinLIM Il-Jin

Lim began climbing in 1988, when he entered Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, and learned photography in Japan. In 2008, he became the first Asian to be awarded at the Trento Film Festival with his documentary The Wall. Alpinist was selected as the Ulju Summit film at the first Ulju Mountain Film Festival, where it was screened. He was also a special director for the Korean film The Himalayas. Korea is pretty much barren when it comes to mountain films, but Lim climbed mountains with a camera for the last 30 years, coming to represent Korean mountain film directors. He was with Kim Chang-ho and the Korean Way Gurja Himal expedition that perished in 2018.
