On August 1978, Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler made the first non-supplemental oxygen ascent of Mt. Everest. Up till that point, it was considered impossible to reach the mountain summit without supplemental oxygen. Messner's non-oxygen ascent has been recognized as a historical event that opened a new era for Alpinism. Messner, as the first climber to climb all 14 eight-thousanders won the nickname of iron man and was praised for his feat to overcome human limitations.
