2026 Karakoram & Himalaya: Student Expeditions at 6,000 Meters
PROGRAM
This past summer, two student-led Himalayan expeditions — one from Gwangju–Jeonnam, the other from Busan — completed their climbs and returned home safely: the Gwangju–Jeonnam Student Alpine Federation's D41 (5,813m) Hope-Sharing Expedition and the Busan Student Alpine Federation's Karakoram Himalaya Expedition. Their outcomes differed, but both journeys bore out years of preparation and hard-won teamwork.
Members of the two expeditions join us to share their experiences first-hand, offering a glimpse of what a Himalayan expedition looks like today and a view of where regional mountaineering — still committed to climbing in its most adventurous form — may be headed.

Oh Young-hoon is anthropologist at Kyungpook National University. He enjoys climbing rock, ice and all types of mountain peaks. He serves on the boards of the Korea Alpine Federation (KAF), the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA), and the Piolets d’Or.
