HJP Trio

PROGRAM

A jazz trio performance featuring original music inspired by the natural landscapes and places of Ulsan. This concert is a space to render in musical language the scenery and time held within the city of Ulsan, and the memories that remain there.

The program unfolds through pieces rooted in the gentle flow of the Taehwa River, the traces of life and long-held memories embedded in Jangsaengpo, and the textures of time accumulated at Bangudae. Each work departs from the atmosphere and sensory quality of a specific place, yet within the organic interplay of piano, bass, and drums, it refuses to settle into a single fixed image — expanding anew with every passing moment. The improvisational spirit that is jazz's hallmark calls familiar landscapes back to life with a strangeness and vividness, musically reconstructing the emotions and time contained within each place.

HJP Trio unfolds the sensory dimensions of Ulsan's nature and historical sites in full relief through delicate melody, free-flowing rhythm, and deeply resonant ensemble. Melodies flowing like the currents of the Taehwa River, a deep resonance evoking memories of Jangsaengpo, and rhythms carrying the ancient temporal depth of Bangudae — these elements intersect and cross, painting the inner life of a city in sound.

This is not just a recital set against the backdrop of Ulsan's landmarks, but a musical journey that records the city's nature, history, and memory in sound. The music that sets out from the Taehwa River, Jangsaengpo, and Bangudae continues into new landscapes within everyone's personal memories and emotions in the audience. Through this, the audience encounters places they thought they knew through fresh eyes, and rediscovers the depth and spirit of the city of Ulsan through the language of jazz.

HJP Trio

HJP Trio is a group led by New Zealand-born jazz pianist Hong Jin-pyo. The trio released their full-length album 「Daily Issues」 in 2015, followed by several singles.

Pianist Hong Jin-pyo studied classical music and jazz in New Zealand, developing a musical style uniquely his own.

HJP Trio combines jazz improvisation and soundscape to translate the nature and time of Ulsan into music. Treating sound not merely as a backdrop but as landscape and the language of the senses, the trio documents the sounds of Ulsan's rivers, sea, and places in musical language.
