Karma, Still Life Goes On with Venerable Neunghaeng

Karma, Still Life Goes On with Venerable Neunghaeng

PROGRAM

A small legal office beside the Suwon District Court, Seongnam Branch. There, where people crushed by debt never stop coming through the door, the director became an office clerk eight years ago to pay off his father's debt. The documentary Karrma follows the stories of a debt-ridden father and his clients, quietly asking where suffering comes from and how it disappears.

The Korean title, ‘Resurrection,’ is a legal term for restructuring debt, and it is also a word for a collapsed life rising again. The question posed by the director, who grew up in a temple, continues after the screening in a conversation with Venerable Neunghaeng. Through the words of a monk who has long contemplated life and death, suffering and letting go, we encounter anew the meaning of the phrase "still, life goes on."

In Korea, a “Beommusa” is a licensed legal practitioner who prepares court documents for people in crisis. In a beommusa’s office, a father aids debtors yet is indebted himself. Eight years ago, fearing that debt might one day destroy his father, the director became his assistant to help repay what was owed. This film traces debt-born pain, seeking dissolution.
