Remembering Shin Na-ri

Remembering Shin Na-ri

PROGRAM

Director Shin Na-ri sought out the traces of time etched into spaces, and documented the stories of the people who carried on their lives there. This is a time to meet, side by side, the works of the late director—who, in every project, sincerely sought to move her audience's heart—and the work of a friend who remembers her.

Director Shin Na-ri's Doban tells the story of master potter Kim Young-gil, who throws himself wholly into making traditional ceramics, and his disciple, artist Park Seong-jun. Master and disciple still walk side by side today, through the grueling, patient process of firing a traditional kiln with clay and firewood gathered directly from the mountains.

The Story You Are Not In is a belated conversation a friend offers to Director Shin Na-ri, who passed away after a battle with cancer. Following the unfamiliar landscape photos the director left behind on Instagram, the friend picks up her camera and sets out to find the places where her gaze once lingered. It is a personal journey of mourning, and a record of a landscape we all share—each of us facing our own solitude before death. It is a story she cannot see, but one we come to see because of her.

Doban

Korea | 2026 | 64min | Color | Documentary

Ceramic master Kim Young-gil pours his soul into traditional pottery, stoking a kiln with clay and firewood gathered by hand—a process of grueling labor. His apprentice, Park Seong-jun, works nights at a convenience store and returns each morning to learn from him. Side by side, the two set out on the mountain path again today.

The Story You Are Not In

Korea | 2026 | 21min | Color | Documentary

A friend passed away from cancer. Unable to process her absence, I stumble upon an unfamiliar place on her Instagram. Following the coordinates of a solitude she shared with no one, I take to the road for a belated conversation, carrying the camera that served as her filmmaker's gaze. In the very place where her vision remained, my new journey begins.

GUEST

Lee Jin-seung

He later joined the production team for director Jeong Ji-young’s short films Moving Out and A Story You Are Not In. Deeply interested in capturing the nuanced layers of people and society across borders, he now actively travels between Cambodia and India to learn from local lives and dedicate himself to documentary work.
