Patagonia – Three Decades

Silvo Karo, recipient of the Piolets d'Or Lifetime Achievement Award, shares the story of his climbing life and philosophy.

Before the formidable walls of Patagonia, a name that alone quickens the pulse of climbers, he devoted three decades of his life. His climbing career has been not a list of achievements but a long journey shaped into a seasoned philosophy through the endless repetition of failure, renewed attempts, and humility before nature.

In this lecture, Silvo Karo speaks to Korean audiences about his relationship with the walls of Patagonia, the climbing philosophy he built there, and what the long journey of climbing has given one person. Join us for a chance to hear, firsthand, the lessons that the mountains have taught him about life.

Silvo Karo

Mountaineering virtuoso Silvo Karo (Slovenia) began his mountain journey in 1977. During his illustrious sporting career, he has actively helped shape modern alpinism. He completed numerous successful expeditions in the mountains of Patagonia, completing many routes and achieving numerous first ascents. Silvo’s essay on the granite Patagonian giants was included in the book Voices from the Summit, which was published by National Geographic in 2000.

Silvo Karo soon revealed yet another talent in the steep walls – an amazing eye for imagery. In 1987, he took a 16mm Bolex camera to the South face of Cerro Torre, where he shot a film that received Trento’s prestigious Silver Gentian for the best mountaineering film. As a cameraman, he contributed to the making of Gore in Ljudje, a TV programme on Slovenian national television. As the founding father and director of the Festival gorniškega filma, he has enriched his mountaineering career through culture. He has been a member of prominent juries at various international mountain film festivals. He has given talks and presentations on nearly every continent. Silvo is an honorary member of the British Alpine Club, and his contribution to global and Slovenian mountaineering is also highly valued in Slovenia.He is also a photographer and writer. In 2018, his autobiographical book Alpinist was published and has already been translated into six languages.

Kim Dong-soo

He began climbing in 1976 as a member of the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Alpine Club(HUFSAC), and has been active in organizations such as Korea Student Alpine Federation(KSAF), Piolet d’Or Asia Organizing Committee, Korea Alpen Book Club, and Ulsan Ulju Mountain Film Festival(UMFF). He climbed Salathé Wall of El Capitan and RNWF of Half Dome in 1982. Currently, he serves as professional reviewer for Riri Publishers, project manager for Harujae Club, and the honorary secretary of the Himalayan Club of Korea. His translated works include PSYCHOVERTICAL(2013), ALPINE WARRIORS(2020), Catherine Destivelle(2020), WINTER 8000(2021), M4 Mountains Die vierte Dimension(2022), Alpine Rising(2025), and ROCK ‘N’ ROLL ON THE WALL(2026).
