Ulju Mountain Culture Awards

The Ulju Mountain Film Festival presents the Ulju Mountain Culture Awards to a person fitting the Film Festival slogan who is among those that have made significant contributions in the advancement of mountain culture including worldwide nature and environment, climbing, film, literature, and media.

Chris BONINGTON

The winner of the Ulju Mountain Culture Awards 2018 is Sir Chris Bonington, a living legend of Alpinism who has not stopped challenging himself.

Sir Chris Bonington is known as the first professional mountaineer pursuing futuristic climbing, and was knighted in 1996 by the Queen of England. He began rock climbing at 16, and went on to lead first climbs on the Annapurna (south face), and Mount Everest (south-west face).

The awards ceremony for the Ulju Mountain Culture Awards will take place in September during the Opening ceremony of the 3rd Ulju Mountain Film Festival. During the festival, Chris Bonington will meet with the audience through special lectures and exhibits.

Rick RIDGEWAY

The Ulju Mountain Culture Awards was further established in 2017 to continue this meaningful exchange of mountain culture. The winner that year was the mountaineer, adventurer, and environmentalist Rick Ridgeway, the first American to summit K2 without oxygen.

Reinhold MESSNER

The Ulju Mountain Culture Awards began in 2016 with the visit of a living legend of mountaineering, Reinhold Messner to the Ulju Mountain Film Festival Pre-Festival.

During the festival, Messner participated in various events such as lectures and exhibitions to introduce mountain culture to the festival audience.
